I just played the Side Hustle game LIVE on Facebook…
But before I tell you about that, I have a confession to make.
There was a time when my friends didn’t really enjoy playing games with me because I was a wee bit too competitive. There’s nothing wrong with a little friendly competition, but I *might* have taken it a bit too far.
Don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t mean or anything, I just liked to win.
I definitely still have a bit of that edge in me, but the older I get the more chill I’ve gotten about this (although come to think of it, it’s been a long time since I’ve played any type of game in person with anyone ????).
Darby Rollins, one of the founders of the Side Hustle card game (The Party Game for Entrepreneurs), invited me to be on their live podcast to play the game. I said yes before I had a chance to watch one of the games, but I knew Darby from having interviewed him on my show and just recently taken the Jarvis 7-Day Book Challenge.
Once I had a chance to watch a previous episode I got a little nervous.
And this is coming from someone who isn’t shy and kind of likes to be on stage.
I’m going to give you a short version of how the Side Hustle game is played.
There’s one investor and 3 entrepreneurs who have to “pitch” the investor on a product. There’s a dice that’s rolled to choose the category (media, tech, home goods, health & wellness, etc.), then a product card is pulled.
Each entrepreneur has to come up with a product pitch for that product in the category selected from the dice roll.
You have to present your pitch as though you’re really pitching it in front of an investor. Ex: “Thanks for having me here today. I’m excited to share my product, X, with you.” Then you proceed to launch into the pitch.
The two ways you can win your pitch from the investor is by being “Funny” or “Fundable.”
Not to brag, but I did get selected “fundable” all three times. #justsayin (guess I’m still pretty competitive).

Here were my categories, products, and what I came up with.
Category: Media & entertainment
Product: Purple Lantern
My pitch: The Purple Lantern is more than just a community, it’s a cutting-edge bio-hacking lantern that emits ultra-violet energy waves to boost energy and save the day for lonely entrepreneurs. It solves the problem of inability to focus and lack of motivation.
I don’t remember where else I went with that, but when they asked me if we had any celebrity spokesperson for the product I said “well naturally we’re in talks with Ryan Reynolds.” This was pretty funny considering the epic flop of Green Lantern, which he starred in. What’s even funnier is that I wasn’t even thinking of that connection when I said it… I was just thinking he’s hilarious with his marketing for his own products (like Aviator Gin).

Product: Scent Cycle
My pitch: Tired of feeling like you smell less-than-pleasant when you’re working out? I don’t have my exact pitch because this was the lightning round so I didn’t get to write it down first, but this product was the perfect in-home exercise that works out your tushy! The Pushy for your tushy can be used for squats, hamstrings, quadriceps, glutes, and more.
When the investor asked me how many we sold I came up with the random number of $323,000… all through grassroots marketing at trade shows and hitting the pavement! haha…
When he asked me what I needed the money for I said it was to take our marketing efforts online.
We each took a turn as the investor and got to select which was “funny” and which was “fundable.”
I was pleasantly surprised at how fun this was as well as how creative my fellow entrepreneurs are. When I was the investor the product was the “Moon Screen.” Here’s what my fellow entrepreneurs came up with:
Darby: Galaxy dating app so space rocks can find the love of their life
Blake: A werewolf & moon app so IF you were a werewolf, you can track the moon cycles to know when you would change into a werewolf
Tomer: A project that enables you to project movies, tv, etc. to the moon, since we all want bigger screens.
You can also ask each entrepreneur any questions you want. They can be as silly or serious as you want.

The Content Creation Side of Side Hustle
This is such a great example of thinking outside of the box for content creation.
Obviously, the fact that it’s a game makes it unique already, but I would think it would be pretty easy to adapt this to most businesses.
How can you create your own version of we did with the Side Hustle game?
As an example, Jodi and I could take an element of the planner and do a live stream where we did hot seat style sessions where we pick a content creator, they tell us what their business is, and what they want to create content on. We then work with them live to create a piece of their plan.
The goal would be that they would then need the planner to finish the rest of their content strategy.
The point of this isn’t that you give away a proprietary process or strategy, it’s to show your expertise, help someone, and then show they can do more with the rest of your product and service.
This model fits the ideal repurposing strategy.
Create ONE piece of content and turn it into multiple pieces of content.
In the example of me being on the show live they have FB live stream, which can be repurposed into audio, written blog posts, audiograms, a YouTube video, emails, a blog post like the one you’re reading now on the guest’s site, emails, social images, and so much more.
It’s a really creative and not-so-common way to stand out from the crowd as well as have a little more fun with your content.
